Introduction
Background Information
The more advanced a life-form on the planet earth becomes, the more numerous and important are the proteins termed 'hormones.' Insulin, the first hormone, appeared 400 million years ago. Our bodies now have at least seven (7) major hormones. And life is terribly affected if any of these key hormones are deficient or excessive.
The major hormones are:
- Human growth hormone
- Thyroid hormones
- Adrenal hormones: cortisol and DHEA
- Gonadal hormones: estrogen and testosterone
- Ovulatory hormone: progesterone
- Energy storage hormone: insulin
- Miscellaneous: parathyroid hormone, melatonin, pregnenolone
When there is a deficiency of these hormones, the individuals may live a shorter, less productive life:
- Human growth hormone: dwarfism
- Thyroid hormone: goiter, weight gain, myxedema, possibly an early death in heart failure.
- Adrenal hormones: increased pigmentation, Addison's disease (may die in stress situations).
- Gonadal hormones: hot flashes, loss of sexual characteristics, ie. menopause.
- Ovulatory hormone: lack of progesterone may be associated with heavy menstrual periods and premenstrual syndrome.
- Insulin: lack of insulin is found in Juvenile (type I) Diabetes Mellitus. Too much insulin is found in Type II (adult onset diabetes).
- Parathyroid hormone: excesses may result in osteoporosis.
We feel that the hormone levels should be adjusted to that of a 30 year-old individual. We will add-back small doses of sex hormones, natural thyroid and in special circumstances, human growth hormone to balance these anabolic hormones against the catabolic insulin and cortisol. We believe that cortisol and insulin are the key to understanding aging.
We agree that appropriate diet and exercise remain the keys to Living Longer and Better!
